Healthy Initiatives (Ukraine)

With support from Global Action, Healthy Initiatives is educating health care providers in nine countries in Central Asia and Eastern Europe on the role that tobacco harm reduction can play in helping adults who smoke combustible cigarettes quit. These science-based trainings are especially tailored to health care providers serving populations living through war, as added stress can be a barrier to smoking cessation.

Alternative Research Initiative (Pakistan)

The Alternative Research Initiative (ARI) is dedicated to raising awareness and educating health care providers and communities about tobacco harm reduction to lower smoking rates. Through local media campaigns in print and across the air waves, ARI dispels misinformation and raises awareness of all the ways adults who smoke in Pakistan can quit. Additionally, ARI researchers are compiling a unique dataset to better quantify the rates of smoking and e-cigarette use among adults in this region.

San Diego State University Research Foundation (USA)

With Global Action’s support, researchers at San Diego State University are conducting health economic research that summarizes 20 years of population-level tobacco and nicotine use data from multiple key national data sources. Specifically, this research team gathers evidence on the impact of public health policies or regulations aimed at limiting youth access to e-cigarettes, and whether these policies result in any unintended consequences. This team also conducts research on the intersection of nicotine and tobacco use with key populations, including the LGBTQ+ community, and other potential health risks, including substance use and weight gain.

Cornell University (USA)

Global Action supports researchers from Cornell University in multiple ways: First, this team conducts research to better understand how adults in the United States make decisions about the types of nicotine or tobacco products they use, with the goal of increasing information and education about tobacco harm reduction. Second, this team has created a mentorship program for researchers in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) aimed at building local capacity to study the economic impact of tobacco harm reduction within their own regions.
